For a year or so, we observed a strong social trend which shows an international awareness among the millennial youth. Indeed, some causes found their voice thank to young adults who speak up to support the purpose or to express their gloominess ! Something smells like a teen spirit here...
First, Emma GONZALES 19 years old, one of the face of March for our lives, the association created after the terrible Parkland's (Florida) massacre of 2018. They organise marches across USA to advocate Gun control project. She moved everyone to tears during her speech last year.
"Not one more. We cannot allow one more person to be killed by senseless gun violence. We cannot allow one more person to experience the pain of losing a loved one."
Greta THUNBERG, 15 years old, who last year, during Cop 24 in Poland, became the european climate activist figure. She is a Swedish teenager and has been diagnosed with Asperger syndrome, she convinced her family to turn vegan and not flying anymore. Too young to vote, she rises her voice and demonstrates to alert politics and society to climate issues that economy and lifestyle creates.
She recently declared in Davos 2019 : " Our house is on fire. I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. And then I want you to act. I want you to act as you would in a crisis"
Finally, Genesis BUTLER 12 years old who as an energetic member of Million dollars vegan in USA, is an animal rights activist and supports ethical vegan behaviours. Last year she gave a Ted Talk about veganism.
This week she launched a challenge to Pope Francis, with the help of the Million Dollar Vegan team, she wrote a letter which urges Pope Francis to try vegan for Lent. Paul Mc Cartney, Moby or Yann Arthus Bertrand are already joining her cause supporting the challenge!
The letter links climate change and pollution, outlines animal farming, the extinction of wildlife and the suffering of farmed animals, a curse concerning both Westerns and Eastern countries. If the challenge succeeds, they will give 1 million dollars to the association of Pope Francis 's choice.
Who are those young and naive spirits, full of wisdom ? They are too young to vote and however smartly enough to use media as a democratic power. This might be a critical point to ask ourselves : What is moving & building the consumers of near tomorrow ?
